What are the bridges & crowns?
Crowns : Why and How they work?
Patients need a crown in order to cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Crowns strengthen damaged teeth and improve their appearance, shape and alignment. A crown is also placed on top of an implant to give it a tooth-like shape and structure for function. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials such as porcelain, ceramics, gold, metal alloys or acrylics. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.
You may need a crown to
● Prevent fracture in a weak tooth
● Restore a fractured tooth
● Join a bridge
● Cover/Cap a dental implant
● Replace a large filling
● Hide discolored tooth and poor shape of tooth
● Cover a tooth post root canal treatment
Bridges : Why and How they work
A bridge is usually needed if you lose one or more teeth. Bridges prevent the remaining teeth from rotating or shifting into empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. Missing teeth may also cause gum disease or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Bridges traverse the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants that surround the gap and serve as anchors for the bridge. Such teeth are called abutments. A replacement tooth which is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments is called a pontic. Bridges are of many types and you can make a choice based on the location of the missing tooth, its function, aesthetic preferences and cost.
